General
Information for a 6 Month Old Baby:
Walkers
–
Avoid using them. They can be dangerous and will delay walking.
Consider a stationary play station instead.
Sun
Exposure –
It is never too early to protect your baby from the sun. Using
a SPF of 15-30 is recommended.
Smoking
-
Your child will reduce his or her chance of developing asthma
by avoiding second hand smoke. Also, your child is less likely
to develop ear infections and pneumonia.
Water
Supply -
Let your Doctor know if you use only bottled water or well water
at home.
Teething
-
Expect your child to start teething soon. Teething begins from
3-12 months. Drooling is common. Fever is unusual. Use teething
rings, frozen wet wash cloths and over the counter analgesics.
Do not use more than the recommended amounts of analgesics as
they can cause serious side effects if over used.
Development
-
Many 6 month old babies have learned to laugh and make sounds.
They can usually follow with their eyes, roll over and pass toys
from one hand to another. They can also sit up by themselves.
Your baby may start getting fussy around strangers.
Diet
-
Add fruits and vegetables to your baby’s diet. Mashed and
finely chopped foods are fine. Extra water or some juice in a
cup is a good idea. No honey or hard chunks (they can make your
baby sick). Do not use milk or juice as a pacifier.
Safety
(Water) -
Do not leave your child unattended around water. Children
can drown in bath tubs and buckets of water.
High
chairs -
Do not leave your child unattended. High chairs can tip and lead
to injuries.
Syrup
of Ipecac-
It should be available in your home (But should only be given
as directed by the Poison Control Center). The phone number for

Kitchen-
Keep your child away from hot liquids, and appliances.
General
–
Check your home for table edges, sharp objects,. medicines
and household poisons. Avoid dangling appliance or curtain cords.
Plug electrical outlets and place safety gates near stairs.
Vaccinations
–
DTaP
(Diptheria, Pertusis, and Tetnus) - Should not be given
if your child has a newly diagnosed seizure disorder. Can cause
fever and redness.
Rotavirus - Can cause a severe
diarrhea in children
HIB
(Haemophilis) - Can cause fever and redness. Prevents
serious cause of meningitis.
Prevnar
(Streptococcus pneumoniae) - Can cause fever and redness.
Prevents serious cause of pneumonia and meningitis.
